If you are not a native of Austin Texas nor have heard of the Chapman family and their traditions, you might ask yourself "Why the Camel"? Camels have been an important part of the Chapman family for more than 20 years. The logo for the Chapman Motors dealerships came about from Don Chapman's love of animals and giving back to the church and community.
Don Chapman, the founder of all the Chapman Motors dealerships in Austin, acquired the Camels originally for the Living Nativity scenes at Park Hills Church during Christmas. These majestic animals were an awe-inspiring scene as the three kings rode in on their camels to the manger on the hillside at Mopac and Zilker Park. In the early years, the camels were very active in the community and church functions. So, it was only natural to use their likeness in advertising for the Chapman Motor Sales dealerships.
Now you may be asking yourself, where did they go? I haven't seen the camels in person for some time now and I'm starting to worry. Albeit their recent performances were particularly stunning as their puppet doubles took control of the Chapman Motor Sales commercials. Not to worry, with time comes many changes and these wonderful animals have earned their retirement and the free-range lifestyle they deserve. Turning in their halters and passing the torch on to the next generation they will always be a mainstay for the Chapman Motor Sales dealerships and the Austin community.
